STORRS, Conn. - Behind a balanced offense led by senior Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) the University of Connecticut volleyball team opened the 2010 season with a 3-0 sweep over Hartford tonight in the UConn Toyota Classic. UConn is 1-0 on the young season while Hartford falls to 0-5 on the year.
With the victory the Huskies improve to 21-14 in season openers, and 12-4 in the UConn Toyota Classic.
Match scores were 25-23, 25-19, 25-13.
The Husky offense struggled in the first set, but rebounded to record a match-best .391 team hitting-percentage in the second set and a .312 team hitting-percentage in the third set.
Murray led the offense with 10 kills and four service aces on the night, while Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) added seven kills and Cayla Broadwater (Williamsport, Md.) and Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) each posted six.
Kirk and Nickel ran the offense during the match, recording 15 and 19 assists respectively.
Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a strong performance in her first collegiate match, posting five kills and two block assists with one service ace.
The Huskies continue action in the UConn Toyota Classic tomorrow, hosting Brown at 12:30 p.m. and Southern Illinois at 7:30 p.m.
