CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Connecticut volleyball team opened BIG EAST play with a 3-0 loss at Cincinnati Friday night. The Huskies dropped the three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-17, and 25-18 to fall to 8-6 on the season and 0-1 in the conference, while the Bearcats improved to 9-6 and 1-0.
UConn senior outside hitter Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) netted a team-best 10 kills and hit .241 for the match, while lifting her career total to 977 kills. On the defensive side of the ball, junior libero Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) recorded a match-high 19 digs, putting her a 939 for her career.
For Cincinnati, senior outside hitter Missy Harpenau tallied a match-high 13 kills to go with eight digs, while hitting .290. As a team, the Bearcats hit .347 over the course of the three sets. Junior middle blockers Emily Hayden and Becca Refenes chipped in with 10 and eight blocks, respectively.
Freshman setter Caylin Mahoney collected 33 assists for Cincinnati, while junior Angela Roidt recorded 24 for Connecticut.
The Huskies remain on the road this weekend as they continue BIG East action at Louisville on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
