STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut volleyball team fell in their BIG EAST opener, 3-0 to the Villanova Wildcats this afternoon in Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies are now 2-10 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova is now 13-3 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

Set scores were 11-25, 22-25, 21-25.

After dropping set one, the Huskies rebounded during set two and had their best showing of the afternoon, posting 12 kills and 23 digs. UConn battled back from a six-point deficit (16-10) to tie the match (16-16) after posting six unanswered points. Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.), Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) tallied kills during that span, bringing the Huskies back into the set.

UConn would take the lead twice more (18-17, 19-18) during set two off of kills from Murray and Allison Nickel (Pittsford, N.Y.) before the Wildcats were able to close the set on three-straight points.

Villanova opened the final set with three straight points before the Huskies rattled of three points of their own to tie the set off of kills from Nickel and Cayla Broadwater (Williamsport, Md.). UConn and the Wildcats battled back and forth staying within two points of each other for the remainder of the set until Villanova posted five unanswered points to win the set and the match.

The UConn offense was led by Quayle (7 kills), Nickel (6 kills) and Murray (6 kills, 2 service aces), while Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) had a match-high 26 assists against Villanova.

Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) anchored the defense posting 21 digs, with Quayle (13), Freeman (10) and Murray (10) also recording double-digit dig efforts on the afternoon.

UConn will close out their four-match home stand next weekend when they host BIG EAST opponents, Louisville and Cincinnati. The Huskies will face the Cardinals on Friday (Oct. 1) at 7:00 p.m. and they will face the Bearcats on Sunday (Oct. 3) at 1:00 p.m.
