STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut volleyball team won its third straight BIG EAST match with a 3-1 victory over West Virginia at Gampel Pavilion, Friday night. The Huskies improved to 14-12 overall and 4-7 in the conference, while the Mountaineers fell to 6-17 and 4-8.
UConn grinded out a 25-23 first set victory before WVU handily won the second, 25-16. Connecticut took control in the third and fourth with wins of 25-17 and 25-18.
Freshman outside hitter Devon Maugle (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) led the Huskies with 14 kills, her sixth straight game in double figures, to go with seven digs. Senior outside hitter Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) was second on the team with 12. Junior outside hitter Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) was one kill shy of her ninth double-double with a nine and 13 effort.
For the Mountaineers, junior Anke De Jong netted a match-high 15 kills, while seniors Kylie Armbruster and Michelle Kopecky added 14 and 13, respectively.
Junior setter Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) recorded her fifth double-double for UConn with 35 assists and 11 digs. Classmate and libero Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.), the BIG EAST’s reigning player of the week, picked up 28 digs, while freshman Brianna Datti (Durham, N.H.) set a career-high with 15.
Senior Serinna Russo registered 28 digs for West Virginia
and classmate Kari Post posted a match-best 40 assists.
As a team, Connecticut blocked eight attacks, while the Mountaineers blocked eight. Senior middle hitter Allison Nickel (Pittsford, N.Y.) led the way with six blocks for UConn.
The Huskies are back in action on Sunday, November 6 for “Senior Day” when they take on Pittsburgh at 2:00 pm.
