STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut volleyball team and Head Coach Kris Grunwald have recently announced the upcoming spring schedule, which features three home matches spread across the next two months.
Beginning next Friday when Holy Cross visits Storrs, UConn will begin spring competition just a few weeks after starting spring team practices earlier this month.
“This will be a very exciting spring for us,” said Grunwald. “The energy and chemistry we have seen thus far in meetings, the gym, and the weight room has been obvious. This spring we are changing a couple of our offensive and defensive systems so we have a lot of work to do technically.”
The rest of the schedule includes a pair of home matches against Bryant and Central Connecticut on March 23 and April 13, respectively. The Huskies will travel to in-state foe Yale on April 7 in their only road match of the spring.
“It has been a challenge as we are down in numbers due to graduation and two still recovering from injuries from the fall but it has allowed us some solid individual attention time,” explained Grunwald.
Unlike past years, UConn will not compete in any all-day tournaments. Due to a smaller roster size this spring, the Huskies will face one opponent per day to simulate a more controlled game atmosphere.
“Due to the lack of depth in one position we will not be playing any all-day spring events but rather more controlled scrimmages against other programs,” These allow us to focus on a more detailed goal each event while also keeping particular players and positions healthy.”
Just because it is February doesn't mean Gampel Pavilion is only for basketball. As volleyball continues practice, it looks to the spring schedule as a way to get a head start on August workouts.
