STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut head volleyball coach Holly Strauss-O'Brien has announced UConn's schedule for the upcoming 2011 season, as the Huskies set out to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament for the 26th time in school history. The schedule is highlighted by 13 home contests, including the seventh annual UConn Toyota Classic which will feature Binghamton, Holy Cross and Howard.
"We are really looking forward to our 2011 season," Strauss-O'Brien said. "We have nine returners and six incoming freshmen who are focused and determined to tackle our preseason opponents in preparation for the battle of the BIG EAST."
The Huskies will open the season in tournament play for the third consecutive year, facing TCU, Grambling State and Texas Tech at the TCU Tournament over the last weekend of August in Fort Worth, Texas.
Connecticut will then host their own UConn Toyota Classic the following weekend, as they welcome Binghamton, Holy Cross and Howard to Gampel Pavilion. Action will begin on Friday, September 2 and this season's UConn Toyota Classic champion will be crowned on Saturday, September 3.
The final two tournaments for the Huskies during the 2011 season will be the UNH Tournament and the Hokie Classic. The UNH Tournament will take place from September 9-10 in Durham, N.H., with UConn taking on Fairfield, Indiana State and the host Wildcats. During the Hokie Classic, the Huskies will go up against UT-Chattanooga, Virginia and Virginia Tech with action taking place on Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17 in Blacksburg, Va.
During the first three weeks of the season, the Huskies will face four opponents for the first time in program history; Binghamton, Grambling State, UT-Chattanooga and Texas Tech. Outside of tournament play, UConn will face just three non-conference opponents this year, hosting intrastate rivals Sacred Heart (September 6) and Hartford (October 4) along with Fordham (October 11).
The Huskies will begin their 2011 BIG EAST campaign during the final week of September, as they face last year's regular season champion and tournament champion in Cincinnati (September 23) and Louisville (September 25). UConn will then return home for matches against Marquette (October 1) and Syracuse (October 2) before taking to the road again to face South Florida on October 7.
UConn then returns to the friendly confines of Gampel Pavilion during mid-October for a match-up against St. John's on Saturday, October 15, before hitting the road once again for contests at Villanova (October 21) and Georgetown (October 23).
The Huskies will finish the home portion of their schedule with a four-game homestand from October 29 through November 6. During that span, UConn will welcome Notre Dame, DePaul, West Virginia and Pittsburgh to Gampel Pavilion.
UConn's final two contests before the BIG EAST Tournament will be at Rutgers and at Seton Hall. The Huskies will face the Scarlet Knights on November 12, before facing the Pirates on November 13, with the conference tournament beginning on Friday, November 18 in Milwaukee, Wis.
