Volleyball Welcomes Two Freshmen In 2016

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut volleyball team and third-year head coach Kris Grunwald have announced the addition of two incoming players for the 2016 season: middle blocker Genna Florig and defensive specialist Avery Spaziani.

Florig joins the Huskies from Wilsonville, Ore., the farthest hometown of any current volleyball player from Storrs. Spaziani, a native of Hingham, Mass., was a letterwinner in multiple sports at Notre Dame Academy.

The pair of freshmen join a UConn team that finished tied for fourth place in The American Athletic Conference in 2015, recording a 16-15 (10-10 AAC) mark. The Huskies saw a four-match improvement from the 2014 campaign.

High School: Sunset High School

Height: 6-1 | Position: Middle Blocker

Before UConn: Four-year letterwinner in volleyball at Sunset High School…First Team All-League in 2013 and 2015…Intended major is sport management.

Personal: Genevieve Michelle Florig is the daughter of David Florig and Caryn Tierney…She has one older sister, Sarah.

Avery Spaziani - #11

Hometown: Hingham, Mass.

High School: Notre Dame Academy

Height: 5-6 | Position: Defensive Specialist

Before UConn: Two-time letterwinner in volleyball at Notre Dame Academy…D2 All-State for two seasons…State champions in 2013 and 2015, serving as captain in her senior season…Boston Globe All-Scholastic for two years…Patriot Ledger All-Star for three years…Letterwinner in golf for one season.

Personal: Avery Laura Spaziani is the daughter of Frank and Laura Spaziani…She has two brothers, Joe and Andrew.
