STORRS, Conn. - Redshirt-sophomore Kayla Williams was named to the 2017 American Athletic All-Conference Preseason Team, while the women's volleyball squad was picked to finish seventh in the AAC preseason poll, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Williams is coming off a stellar freshman campaign, receiving All-American Athletic Conference Second Team honors in 2016. Last season, the outside hitter led the team in kills (392), total attacks (1,045), service aces (28), digs (332) and points (439), while her 3.47 kills per set were a seventh best in the conference.
The Huskies, who finished eighth in the conference in 2016, received 60 votes in the poll behind preseason favorite Wichita State (116 points and seven first place votes). Cincinnati and Temple rounded out the top three, receiving 101 and 90 votes, respectively, while 2016 regular season champions SMU was picked fourth with 90 votes.
UConn will return 10 players to the court this fall and will welcome four newcomers as the Huskies look to continue their growth under Head Coach Kris Grunwald.
The squad will host their annual Blue vs. White Scrimmage on Friday, August 18 at 3:00 p.m. in Guyer Gym. Admission to the scrimmage is free.
The regular season will begin on Friday, August 25 against Sacramento State (12:00 p.m.), as the team is headed to New York for the St. John Invitational. UConn will also square off against New Hampshire on Aug. 25 at 8:00 p.m., prior to concluding the tournament with a 5:00 p.m. match against host St. John on Aug. 26.
