Conference Release

– Under the guidance of second-year head coach Kris Grunwald, the UConn volleyball team has been selected to finish eighth out of 11 teams in the American Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll, as announced by the league on Monday. Additionally, senior middle blocker Immanuella Anagu (Culver City, Calif.) was named to the Preseason All-Conference team.

UConn earned 41 total points in the poll, 19 points ahead of East Carolina and Tulane, who tied for the ninth spot with 22 points. The Huskies finished 5-15 in conference play last season.

UCF (94) tallied seven of 11 first-place votes from The American’s head coaches on its way to being named preseason favorite after clinching last year’s regular season conference title. SMU (91) earned three first-place votes to finish second overall. Temple was projected to finish third with 84 total points and claimed one first-place vote.

SMU’s setter Avery Acker was named the Preseason Player of the Year and returns for her senior campaign after leading the conference and ranking fourth in the NCAA with 11.68 assists/set during the 2014 season.

Anagu, one of two UConn seniors, earned a spot on the league’s preseason squad. She led the Huskies with 106 blocks and stood third in kills per set (2.41) during her junior season in 2014. Anagu became the first player in The American to earn both Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors in the same season.

The Huskies will hold their annual Blue vs. White intrasquad scrimmage on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion. Admission is free-of-charge. The regular season is set to begin on Aug. 28 when Connecticut welcomes Hartford, Rhode Island and Syracuse for the UConn Invitational. Opening day of the tournament will take place at the University of Hartford and matches held on Aug. 29 will be held in Storrs at Gampel Pavilion.
