Volleyball Holds Blue and White Scrimmage

Aug. 19, 2016

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut volleyball team held its annual Blue and White scrimmage on Friday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion, as the Huskies prepare for their season-opener at Syracuse next Friday at 5 p.m. (ET).

Four sets were played in the scrimmage, as players rotated from side-to-side so the coaches were able to see different players in different offensive and defensive schemes. The Blue Team coincidentally won every set, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21, 15-8.

In terms of offensive attack, junior Kenya Cason recorded 14 kills and two errors on 36 attack opportunities. Senior Hayley Cmajdalka had 11 kills in 22 attacks, while Iman McGary had nine and Tosin Adeniyi recorded 10.

Senior Rebecca Rivera had a game-high 25 assists, while sophomore Emma Turner had 21 total assists of her own. Elizabeth Kline led with 15 digs and Kennedy Arundel had 14 on Friday.

Freshman Genna Florig made her presence felt with five block assists throughout the match, tying senior Camille Evans for the team-high.

The Huskies and support staff used Friday as a practice run for the home-opener, which will be on Friday, Sept. 9 on the first day of the Dog Pound Challenge. It’s a two-day tournament that features UConn, Yale, St. Francis and Loyola Maryland.

Heading into next week, UConn has a few days of practice before the matches start to count – beginning with the Syracuse Invitational. It plays against the Orange on Friday and at Colgate on Saturday at 4 p.m. (ET).
