Huskies Open 2011 With Blue vs. White Scrimmage

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut volleyball team kicked off the 2011 season this afternoon, as the Huskies held their annual Blue vs. White scrimmage. The Huskies, who just finished their second week of preseason camp, have just three more days until they open the 2011 regular season.

Senior Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) led the UConn offense, posting 13 kills and a .250 hitting percentage. She was joined in double-digit kills by junior Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) who tallied 10. Sophomore Jackie Wattles (Liberty Hill, Texas) and freshman Devon Maugle (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) each recorded eight kills, while junior Cayla Broadwater (Williamsport, Md.) added seven.

Junior Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) and freshman Katie Robinson (Los Altos, Calif.) split time as the setter during the scrimmage, with Roidt posting 35 assists and Robinson tallying 16.

Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.), who served as the libero for the blue team, picked up 13 digs on the afternoon while Kirk was just shy of a double-double, posting nine digs. Sophomore Julia Hamer (Burlington, Ont.) and Roidt both had eight digs during the scrimmage and freshman Amy Christensen (Ashburn, Va.) added seven as the libero for the White team.

Both the Blue and White teams combined for 28 block assists on the day, along with seven block solos. Sophomore Colby Billhardt (Darien, Conn.) led the Huskies with five block assists and one block solo, while Broadwater and Quayle also added five block assists. Maugle had a team-high three block solos, as Wattles tallied two block solos and three block assists.



The Huskies will open the 2011 regular season Friday, August 26 in Fort Worth, Texas when they participate in the TCU Tournament, facing Grambling State, Texas Tech and the host Horned Frogs. Fans will be able to follow the Huskies during their first weekend of action via gametracker, while the UConn vs. TCU match on Saturday, August 27 will also be streamed live on the web.
