STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut volleyball head coach Kris Grunwald announced on Friday that Brianna Datti (Durham, N.H.), Devon Maugle (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and Erika Thomas (Ocoee, Fla.) will serve as captains for the 2014 season.
Seniors Datti and Maugle both served as team captains in 2013 and will welcome Thomas as a tri-captain when the Huskies open up the regular season on Aug. 29. Earlier this week, the Huskies were picked to finish sixth in the conference in a vote of the league's coaches.
Maugle appeared in 25 matches for the Huskies last season, recording 180 kills and a .155 attack percentage. She notched nine double-digit kill performances through the first 13 matches, including a streak of seven in a row from Sept. 7-21. She appeared on the American Athletic Conference's weekly honor roll on Sept. 16 and also earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Dartmouth Duel and UConn Classic. She put together a nine-kill performance with four service aces in Wednesday's Blue vs. White scrimmage.
Datti will close out her college career in 2014 and has a chance to crack into some of UConn's longest standing records. In 2013, she recorded 541 digs, which is the sixth-best single season mark in program history. The Husky standout needs just 121 digs in 2014 to crack into UConn's top-10 all-time leaders and can reach the top-five with 526. In addition to her work on defense, Datti led the 2013 squad with a career-best 29 service aces. On Wednesday, she led the White Team with 24 digs and also posted four assists.
Thomas enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign in 2013, finishing third on the team with 244 kills and posting a team-best .257 attack percentage. Her 138 blocks (1.10 block/set) were the most on the team, highlighted by a career-high 12 block performance against Cincinnati on Oct. 25. She earned a spot on The American's weekly on Roll on Sept. 22 and was tabbed as an All-Tournament Team member at the IPFW Invitational on Aug. 31.
The Huskies officially kick off the 2014 season on Friday, Aug 29 when they host the UConn Classic at Gampel Pavilion.
