STORRS, Conn. – The UConn volleyball team will compete in its first regular season match of the 2017 season, traveling to New York for the St. John’s Invitation on Friday, Aug. 25 and Saturday, Aug. 26. The Huskies are scheduled for a pair of games on Friday against Sacramento State (12 p.m.) and New Hampshire (8 p.m.), before wrapping up the tournament with a 5:00 p.m. tilt against the host team St. John’s on Saturday.
A Year Ago
The Huskies are coming off a 16-15 campaign, including a 7-13 mark in conference play. The squad returns 10 letterwinners to the 2017 roster, including 2016 All-American Athletic Conference Second Team selection Kayla Williams. The redshirt-freshman is looking to improve on her stellar freshman campaign, where she paced the team in kills (392), total attacks (1,045), service aces (28), digs (332) and points (439), while her 3.47 kills per set were a seventh best in the conference.
Additionally, the Huskies will look to seniors Danielle Cabel, Kenya Cason and Tosin Adeniyi for leadership in their final year. Cabel finished the 2016 season second on the team with 264 kills, while Adeniyi led the team in blocks with 82 (19 solo, 62 assists).
Scouting Sacramento State
The Hornets, who were 20-12 last fall, return 12 players to the court in 2017. Shannon Boyle headlines the team’s returners after coming off a team-best 398 kill season. Sacramento State welcomes four freshman to the roster, including two right from California.
Notes on New Hampshire
The Wildcats return 14 letterwinners from last year's squad that finished 21-11 overall, including 10-2 in America East, and advanced to the NCAA Championship tournament for the fourth consecutive year. Included among the returning Wildcats are four conference award winners –Courtney Bowman, Gabri Oihava, Kennedi Smith and Emily Tanski.
Scouting St. John’s
The Red Storm team that went 16-15 a season ago returns 10 players and four starters, including its kills and digs leader from last season in Gia Traballi. Danisha Mossis back for the Red Storm after a season that saw finish in the top 10 in the nation in blocks per set. St. John’s welcomes four newcomers to the 2017 squad, which is highlighted by Yanjiao Zhao, a 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Second Team All-American.
