STORRS, Conn. – The UConn volleyball team will open the home portion of their 2011 schedule this weekend, as the Huskies host the seventh annual UConn Toyota Classic (September 2 & September 3). Taking part in the two-day tournament will be Binghamton, Holy Cross and Howard.
The Huskies will open the classic with a 7:30 p.m. match-up against Holy Cross on Friday (Sept. 2), before facing Howard (12:30 p.m.) and Binghamton (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday, September 3. UConn boasts a 13-5 record during the classic, including three championships during the 2005, 2006 and 2008 seasons. Howard, Holy Cross and Binghamton will be participating in the event for the first time, as the Huskies have welcomed 16 different teams to the annual event over the past six years.
Friday’s contest between UConn and Holy Cross will be the 14th between the two teams, and the first during head coach Holly Strauss-O’Brien’s tenure. The Huskies will be facing Howard for just the second time in program history, while the Connecticut-Binghamton match-up will be the first.
Last weekend, the Huskies began the 2011 season at the TCU Tournament, claiming a 3-0 victory over Grambling State and falling to Texas Tech and the host Horned Frogs. Senior Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) was named to the All-Tournament Team, leading UConn with 36 kills, 22 digs and three blocks. The honor marked the fourth time that Kirk has been named to an All-Tournament Team in her career.
