STORRS, Conn. (September 14, 2007) - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team will host the UConn Toyota Classic on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 14-15 in Gampel Pavilion. Hofstra, Long Island and Middle Tennessee State will join UConn this year, as each team will play three matches in this two-day event.
Connecticut won last year's Toyota Classic as setter Bridget Denson-Dorman (Golden Valley, Minn.) picked up the Tournament MVP honor and teammates Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) and Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) both earned spots on the All-Tournament team.
This weekend's competition stands just before BIG EAST Conference play, as the Huskies will travel to Villanova on Saturday, Sept. 22 for a 2 p.m. match-up. Before UConn can look ahead, they must get through three competitive programs, including previously ranked Middle Tennessee State. Last week, the Blue Raiders were ranked 25th in the country before their first loss of the season to Missouri State.
UConn is coming off a five-game victory over Northeastern on Wednesday night, which found the Huskies up 2-0 before Northeastern took the next two, to tie the match at two games apiece. In the fifth game, it was a battle to the end, as UConn came out on top 15-13 for their eighth win of the season.
The UConn Toyota Classic will begin on Friday evening with a 5:00 p.m. match featuring Long Island and Middle Tennessee State. The Huskies will take on Hofstra following the first match, at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Middle Tennessee State will face Hofstra in a 10:00 a.m. match-up followed by a 12:30 p.m. match featuring UConn and Long Island. After a short break, Hofstra will see Long Island at 5:00 p.m. while UConn will finish up weekend play with a 7:30 p.m. match against Middle Tennessee State.
