STORRS, Conn. -
Poised to take possession of the career-dig record entering her final season with the University of Connecticut women's volleyball team, senior Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) did just that on Saturday. In the midst of collecting 12 digs against the University of Rhode Island in the Huskies' second game of the Boston College Tournament, Isaac broke a 13-year-old program record with a majority of the season ahead of her.
Since 1996, Heather Sokol held the Connecticut career record for digs with 1,729. Annette Rynn came close to breaking it after tallying 1,722 in her career from 1995-98. Following that, no UConn volleyball student-athlete came remotely close to breaking Sokol's record until Isaac stepped on campus in 2006.
"We are really excited for Jess and her accomplishment of breaking our program's career record in digs, head coach Holly Strauss-O'Brien said. "She has been an integral part of our line up and success the past 3 years. I am proud of her for reaching this individual milestone and look forward to some of her best volleyball still ahead."
The Erlanger, Ky. native began her career with 536 digs in her rookie campaign and proceeded to record top-10 single-season totals from that point on. Her freshman season total stands at No. 6 while her sophomore (533) and junior (469) dig totals are seventh and 10th on the single season list, respectively.
Thus far Isaac has 210 digs in 2009 for a career total of 1,748 digs with 15 regular season matches remaining in her final season of collegiate volleyball. She is averaging 3.33 digs per set this season while holding a 4.49 dig per set career average.
In addition to etching her name atop the career digs list, Isaac cracked the top-10 all-time service ace leaders this season. She has amassed 113 in her four-year career and is eighth on the all-time list. She averages 0.29 per set in her career and is averaging 0.22 per set this season.
Twice a team captain of the Huskies, Isaac will continue to lead UConn volleyball as the team prepares for the BIG EAST portion of the 2009 schedules this weekend with a 7 p.m. match against Notre Dame on Friday and a 2 p.m. match with DePaul on Sunday. Both matches will be held at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
