Volleyball Set To Open BIG EAST Play at West Virginia and Pittsburgh



    STORRS, Conn. (September 22, 2006) – The University of Connecticut volleyball team hits the road this weekend to open BIG EAST play at West Virginia on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. and then facing Pittsburgh on Sunday at 2 p.m.

    The Huskies (9-3) enter the match with the Mountaineers (1-13) owning an 11-2 all-time series record edge. UConn swept WVU in last season’s match up in Storrs, 3-0. The Mountaineers are led by junior outside hitter Abby Tevis’ 3.35 kills per game and sophomore Lisa Hough’s 0.77 blocks per game.

    The Panthers currently hold an 11-4 record. The Huskies defeated Pitt last season in Storrs, 3-1, but the Panthers are ahead in the series 11-7. Pitt is led by junior outside hitter Diana Andreyko who has tallied 216 kills on the season, averaging 4.32 per game. Senior setter Azadeh Boroumand has 562 assists this season for a 12.22 per game average.

    UConn is led in kills by freshman Kate Seabaugh (St. Louis, Mo.) who has tallied 135 kills thus far in the season. Junior Gina Heiderman (Niles, Ill.) is close behind with 126. Controlling the offense for the Huskies is freshman Bridget Denson-Dorman (Maple Grove, Minn.) who has 536 assists on the season, averaging 12.18 per game and also leads the team in service aces with 22. Freshman Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) leads the team defensively with 208 digs.
