Volleyball Blanks Villanova, 3-0, for First BIG EAST Victory



    VILLANOVA, PA (Sept. 23, 2001) - Behind a double-double effort by sophomore outside hitter (Ridgecrest, CA), the University of Connecticut volleyball team rebounded from a Friday loss to Rutgers by sweeping Villanova, 3-0, Sunday. The Huskies improve to 7-2 overall, 1-1 in the BIG EAST while Villanova falls to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST.

    The two teams played evenly in the first game, as both struggled offensively with sub-.150 hitting percentages. Despite the sluggishness, Connecticut claimed the first set 30-26.

    In the second game, UConn found its offensive rythem, blistering Villanova with a .324 hitting percentage en route to a 30-23 victory. The third set was much of the same, as the Huskies recorded a .471 hitting percentage for a 30-15 victory.

    UConn was paced by Laura Wooley, who recorded her fourth double-double of the season with ten kills and 11 digs. Junior (Lancaster, CA) and sophomore (Stockton, CA) each registered 11 kills while hitting .333 and .474, respectively. Husky senior setter (Fairview Park, OH) was one dig short of a double-double, posting a season-high 41 assists and nine digs.

    Jacqueline Fugiel led the Wildcats with ten kills while Jennifer Edwards contributed 26 assists.

    Connecticut returns to action this Friday in the nerac.com UConn Invitational. The Huskies face St. Peter’s at noon, followed by a 7 p.m. match against Northeastern.
