STORRS, CT (Sept. 24) - The University of Connecticut womens volleyball team (7-6) suffered a four-game loss to Northeastern (7-6) by scores of 30-18, 26-30, 30-26, 30-25 in a non-conference match at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. Larissa Adomat led Northeastern with 14 kills, and Megan Crawley (Georgetown, TX) led UConn with a match-high 17 kills.
The match began on a bad note for UConn, who struggled with hitting errors and mangaged to hit just .062 as a team while Northeastern was strong with a team percentage of .310. The second game saw things turn around for UConn, who matched Northeastern in statistics, but managed to pull through at the end with key kills from Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA) and Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA).
Game three was reminiscent of the first for UConn, who lost the rhythm they had found in game two and again were plagued by hitting errors. Raftyn Birath (Marshall, MN) had a strong game with seven kills, and although the Huskies made a push toward a comeback near the end, the deficit proved too great to overcome. Crawley tried to keep UConn alive in game four, and knocked down nine kills with only two errors, but Northeastern held a steady lead for the entire game and eventually took the match with their consistent performance.
Birath and Hadenfeldt both recorded double-figure kills with 16 and 14, respectively, and Hadenfeldt added 13 digs. Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) led the defensive effort with a match-high 18 digs.
Karrin Moore and Whitney Turner notched 12 and 10 kills for Northeastern, respectively, and Jana Kubalova tallied a team-high 15 digs.
UConn returns to action this weekend, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27 when they host the UConn Autumn Classic in Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. First up for the Huskies is a match against Florida Atlantic at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
