STORRS, CT (Nov. 10, 2001) -- Behind a double-double from senior (Fairview Park, OH) on her Senior Day, the University of Connecticut volleyball team swept Providence, 3-0, Saturday afternoon for its 20th win of the season. UConn improves to 20-6 overall this season, 8-3 in the BIG EAST, while Providence is 6-20, 0-12 in the BIG EAST.
UConn dominated Providence in every major statistical category and steadily increased its hitting percentage in each game, finishing the match with a .252 percentage. Providence hit only .086.
After losing the first two sets by scores of 21-30 and 23-30, respectively, the Friars battled back in the third set before the Huskies pulled away with the 30-27 win behind a .302 hitting percentage in game three. Juniors (Ridgecrest, CA) and (Lancaster, CA) led UConn with 11 kills apiece. Sophomore (Ridgecrest, CA) and freshman (Benicia, CA) each tallied double-digit digs with 14 and 10, respectively.
Shaker, UConns sole senior, notched 39 assists and 10 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. She also posted four kills and a .667 attack percentage.
For the Friars, Sarah Katinger recorded 13 kills and 15 digs while Ayana Cadres added 12 kills.
With 20 wins, UConn volleyball has now reached the 20-win plateau each of the past five seasons, including four under head coach .
UConn returns to action tomorrow at Boston College in its final regular season contest. Match time is 1 p.m. The Huskies have already clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, to be held next weekend in Pittsburgh, PA.
