Junior Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) of the University of Connecticut volleyball team was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team on Thursday evening at conference banquet. This is the fifth-consecutive season that a UConn player has been named to the all-conference second team.
Murray has led the team in kills in 13 matches this season and boasts a team-best 2.56 kill per set average. In conference, Murray enters the tournament averaging 3.02 kills per set. The Carmel, Ind. native is a consistent presence in the back row contributing 1.36 digs per set overall. She is averaging 1.60 digs per BIG EAST set.
This season, Murray recorded two of her three double-doubles this season in BIG EAST matches. Most recently she had 14 kills and 14 digs against West Virginia on Oct. 30. She set a career-high in digs with 16 against Marquette (Oct. 9). She dished a season-high assists (three) at Louisville (Nov. 15).
She leads the team in overall blocks this season (0.88) with 108 total blocks, including 24 solo stops. Murray has led the team in blocks in 16 matches, including each of the last seven matches played.
The spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team is the first post season award for the junior middle blocker. She received regular season accolades with a pair of spots on the BIG EAST Honor Roll twice on Oct. 5 and 28.
Murray and the Connecticut Huskies (14-16, 7-7) take on Cincinnati at the Kentucky International Convention Center at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. UConn, the No. 7 seed, earned its fourth-consecutive BIG EAST Tournament berth and looks to get past the No. 2 seed Bearcats (22-9, 12-2) in the quarterfinal match.
