BRONX, N.Y. – Redshirt-senior Lauren Sara (Stratford, Conn.) continued her stellar 2014 campaign, finishing third at the NCAA Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. and earning a trip to Terre Haute, Ind. to compete in the NCAA Championships as an individual on Nov. 22. Fellow captain Emily Durgin (Portland, Maine) delivered another strong performance, crossing the line in 20:30.98 to claim 12th overall and earned an at-large individual bid to the national event.
As a team, the Huskies claimed 12th out of 40 teams with 307 total points.
The veteran captain finished the 6K race in in 20:13.99, averaging 5:26 per mile to earn an automatic berth in the upcoming championship.
"Lauren Sara ran a great race," said coach J.J. Clark. "She executed perfectly and pinched her ticket to the NCAA Championships. I'm happy for her. In addition, Emily Durgin ran a tough race, showing good consistency."
Junior Abby Mace (21:52.55) turned in a top-100 result, grabbing 84th overall and third among Husky athletes. Next up, junior Laura Williamson checked in at No. 103 (22:07.05) and Alana Pearl (22:09.10) took 105th in her first NCAA Regional showing.
The Huskies edged out Boston University (389) to sneak into the top-12. Iona posted the best team score (91), and claimed three of the top six overall finishers. In 2013, the Husky squad earned an 11th-place finish.
Next up, Sara will have eight days off before preparing to compete in the NCAA Championships. The Connecticut native last competed at the national championships in the 2012 season, taking 66th out of 253 runners in the 6K race.
