Women's Cross Country Wins Blue Devil Invitational for Second Straight Year



    New Britain, Conn. (September 2, 2006) –
    Senior Jillian Sullivan (Bristol, Conn.) was victorious for the second straight season at the Blue Devil Invitational, hosted by Central Connecticut State, to lead the Huskies to a first place finish on Saturday.

    Sullivan finished in an impressive time of 17:23 to open the 2006 season.

    “I’m extremely pleased with the preparation the team has put in,” head coach Bill Morgan said. “This was an outstanding way for Jillian to start out the season and we’re very excited about her championship performance.”

    Freshman Nick Junod (Cicero, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut with a second place finish (18:41) followed by sophomore Kate Vaughan (Bethel Park, Pa.) in fourth (18:54) and junior Orlaith Cunningham (Branford, Conn.) in fifth (19:05).

    Sophomore Carrie Corbett, a transfer from Memphis, finished her first race in a UConn uniform in 11th (19:47). Sophomore Rebecca McCollum (Monroe, Conn.) took 12th (19:50) while freshman Meghan Steenburgh (Victor, N.Y.) finished 13th (19:53.

    Sophomore Keelan King (Scotia, N.Y.) and Vicki Weisman (Rutland, Mass.) rounded out the Husky finishes in 20th (20:30) and 24th (20:40), respectively.

    “This was a great season opener and we’re very pleased,” distance coach Kim McGreevy said. “They were aggressive off the line and we’re expecting great things from this group this season.”

    UConn will be back in action on Saturday, September 16, 2006 as they return to New Britain, Conn. to take part in the Ted Owens Invitational. The race begins at 12 p.m.
