Freshmen Look to Lead at the Battle in Beantown

Sept. 21, 2017

STORRS, Conn. - Led by a strong group of freshmen, the UConn women's cross country team looks to continue its early success as they prepare for the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown in Boston, Mass. on Friday, Sept. 22.

The Huskies have turned in two, first place finishes in their first two races of the season, claiming titles at the Minuteman Invitational and UB Stampede Invitational, respectively.

Mia Nahom is proving to be the squad's top runner thus far, as the freshman has led all Huskies across the finish line in consecutive races. In her first two collegiate debuts, Nahom has turned in an individual third and second play finish, respectively. Nahom, who finished with a course time of 21:46.3, will lead a group of runners that placed five runners in the top-10 a week ago.

UConn will also look to freshman Brianna O'Brien for a strong performance. After finishing fourth in her first collegiate race, O'Brien followed that performance with a seventh place finish (22:02.4) at the UB Stampede Invitational.

The junior class of Kelsey Swanson, Courtney Akerley and Haley Hasty have proven to be consistent leaders after a pair of strong performances. The trio has recorded two, top-10 finishes in their first two races, as the three have crossed the finish line no more than eight seconds apart.

The Huskies will face a tough 23-team field on Friday. The race is slated to begin at 3 p.m. For live results click here.
