STORRS, Conn.- The women’s cross country team returns to action on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison. The team will send nine runners, including this week’s BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of the Week freshman Emily Durgin.
“This meet is by far the deepest field assembled outside of the NCAA Championships and it’s going to be a really big opportunity for the team to try to score those valuable “at-large” points before the NCAA Regional's,” stated Head Coach Andrea Grove-McDonough.
Lauren Sara, Shauna McNiff, Abby Mace, Kim Moran, Allison Lasnicki, Allison Cooper, Julia Zrinyi and Brigitte Mania will be joined by Durgin at Friday’s competition. They will be missing a key component Lindsay Crevoiserat who is unable to run due to illness.
“Lindsay’s absence certainly going to hurt us in the overall score and how we match up against the very best teams in the country, but the good news is we have two other athletes in Sara and Lasnicki that can more than make up for the loss of a low scorer like Lindsay,” Grove-McDonough continued.
The Huskies will face off against a tough slate with 20 of the nation’s 30 ranked teams competing on Friday.
“The question is who will fill the void left at spot 5 as Shauna McNiff and Julia Zrinyi are going to have to slide up and score at 3 and 4. We need a big day from someone else to be that 5th and I feel we have a number of athletes that could do that on any given day, so I’m optimistic about how it will all play out,” Grove-McDonough finished.
