STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s cross country team is headed to Philadelphia’s Belmont Plateau on Saturday morning for the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship.
The men’s 8k race is set to fire off at 10:00 am with the women’s 6k race to follow at approximately 10:50 am. The Huskies will run in a 10-team field featuring Cincinnati, ECU, Houston, Memphis, USF, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State.
Head Coach J.J. Clark believes the squad’s preparation and success in the weeks leading up to the event will make for an exciting race. “The team has trained well and I look forward to the meet. I would like to continue to do what we have done all year,” said Clark.
Freshmen Brianna O’Brian and Mia Nahom have been UConn’s most consistent runners this fall, helping the Huskies to first-places finishes at the Minuteman Invitational, Stampede Invitation and most recently the Rothenberg Run. Nahom grabbed her first career individual title this season at the Minuteman Invitational with a time of 17:55.
UConn’s Haley Hasty also garnered an individual title this season with a time of 17:24 at the Rothenberg Meet. The junior has been a top competitor for the Huskies who earned a No. 8 ranking in the USTFCCCA Northeast Regional Poll, announced on Tuesday.
“When it comes down to it and if we want to be successful, we have to do our best, pack well and race as a team.”
