Bowden Leads Women's Cross Country at NCAA Regional Championship



    VAN CORTLANDT PARK, N.Y. (November 15, 2008) Meghan Bowden (Tyngsboro, Mass.) led the University of Connecticut women’s cross country team to an 18th place finish out of 34 competing programs at the NCAA Division I Northeast Regional Cross Country Championship on Saturday afternoon.

    Bowden led the way with a 54th place standing with a time of 22:59.2, while being the Huskies' top runner in the championship race. with the 62nd finish. Senior captain Kate Vaughan (Bethel Park, Pa.) was UConn's second finisher as she completed her senior season.

    "Our team worked hard despite battling injuries," said distance coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "These ladies gave it everything that they had. We are looking for better things to come out of this program next year but this year, we made the best out of what we had while we were shorthanded on runners due to injuries."

    Providence won the Regional Championship title with 36 points as Syracuse and Boston College rounded out the top three teams with 90 and 75 points, respectively. UConn finished with 527 among the 34 teams competing.

    Providence's Danette Doetzel took the top spot with a time of 20:56.5 to earn the victory and move to the NCAA Division I Championship set for Nov. 24 in Terre Haute, Ind.

    "We have to acknowledge our two seniors who ran their best race of the season today," said Grove-McDonough. "Kate (Vaughan) was our second scorer while Rebecca (McCollum) was our fifth. They left it all out there on the course and gave all they had at the end.

    "Now we have a short break and are ready to jump right into the indoor season and are excited for the successful that awaits us."
