AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Darren Kelly scored 16 points and seldom-used point guard Fredie Williams forced two critical turnovers in the final 40 seconds that led to four straight Texas points and a 60-56 victory Monday night over No. 15 Connecticut.

Texas (13-3), which had fallen out of the Top 25 after a loss at Nebraska on Saturday, extended its home winning streak to 23.

Texas tied it at 54 with 1:18 left when James Thomas intercepted a pass at midcourt and lobbed it to Kelly as he was falling out of bounds. Kelly finished the fast break with a layup.

UConn (13-4) took it back down the court for the lead when Williams stepped up. Riding the bench for most of the season after starting the first three games, Williams was put in the game to help the Longhorns keep up with UConn's speedy guard, Taliek Brown.

The move paid off as Williams stripped Brown on the Huskies' next two possessions.

Brown had beaten Williams on the dribble on the previous possession and tried again. This time, Williams picked him off with his right hand and led a fast break down the floor that James Thomas finished with a putback layup to put Texas ahead 56-54.

On UConn's next trip up the floor, Brown again tried to dribble down the lane only to have Williams knock the ball to Kelly, who was fouled and made two free throws for a 58-54 Texas lead.

After Tony Robertson hit two foul shots for UConn, Maurice Evans hit a pair of free throws for Texas with 14.2 seconds left.

UConn worked it down the floor, but the Texas defense forced nearly eight seconds off the clock before Robertson could launch a 3-pointer that missed off the front of the rim and into Evans' hands.

Edmund Saunders led UConn with 13 points.

Evans and Chris Owens each had 11 points for Texas and Thomas added 10.

UConn's Albert Mouring, who needed six points to pass 1,000 for his career, reached the mark in the first half and finished with 10 points.

Texas held UConn to 35 percent shooting. The Longhorns have won 27 in a row when holding their opponent under 40 percent.
