BLACKSBURG,Va. (AP) -- Connecticut rode the early hot shooting of Albert Mouring to a 61-46 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Connecticut (17-8, 6-6 Big East) has now won four of its last five after dropping five straight games. Virginia Tech (8-16, 2-11) lost its sixth in a row and is on a
1-9 skid.
After taking an early 10-5 lead the Hokies made only four of 23 shots through the first 15 minutes of the half. Meanwhile, the Huskies went on a 22-1 run that
propelled them to a 27-13 lead.
Mouring was 6-for-6 in the half, including three 3-pointers as the Huskies connected on 15-of-24 2-point shots. Brian Chase had 11 points - including a trio of
3-pointers - but Virginia Tech trailed 36-22 at the half.
Connecticut cooled off from the field, shooting 8-for-24 in the second half, but the Hokies couldn't gain any ground, trailing by as many as 19 points.
Connecticut had a 37-26 rebounding edge, including 25-13 on the defensive boards.
Mouring finished with a game-high 18 points while Jonnie Selvie and Caron Butler had 12 each. Chase scored 15 and Mibindo Dongo 12 for the Hokies.
