EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Darius Lane hit a long, off-balance three-point basket with 6.1 seconds to play Saturday to lift Seton Hall to a 65-63 victory over Connecticut and assure the Pirates of a berth in the Big East Tournament.

Lane, who did not start for the first time this season because he missed a meeting, finished with 15 points as Seton Hall (14-13, 5-11 Big East) closed its regular season. Seton Hall will face St. John's in the opening round of the Big East tournament

The Huskies had a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime when Taliek Brown was fouled by Marcus Toney-El with 0.5 seconds to play. But Brown missed the first shot of a 1-and-1, Johnnie Selvie missed a tip and Eddie Griffin rebounded to give Seton Hall the victory and end a three-game Pirate losing streak.

The loss was a huge setback for UConn, which had won four of its last five, and probably needs at least two more wins to ensure an NCAA tournament berth. The Huskies (19-10, 8-8) and will face either Georgetown or Syracuse in the first round of the Big East.

Connecticut led 59-56 with 2:45 to play after Caron Butler hit a pair of free throws. But Ty Shine hit a free throw and Lane pumped in a three-pointer with 2:06 remaining giving the Hall a 60-59 edge.

Albert Mouring scored on a pullup for the Huskies, but Griffin hit two free throws putting the Pirates on top again with 90 seconds on the clock. Selvie put UConn ahead for the last time with 1:12 to play when he rebounded Brown's miss.

Seton Hall trailed throughout the first half but cut the gap to 29-27 at the intermission on back-to-back three-point baskets by Andre Barrett and Lane.

Griffin finished with 16 for Seton Hall while Butler had 15 and Brown added 13 for the Huskies.
