Softball splits doubleheader on day two at Black and Gold Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. – The UConn softball team won their first game of the season in a comeback win over Georgia State on Friday afternoon. The Huskies mounted a late comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning earning their first walk-off win of the season. UConn dropped their second game on the day, losing to Seattle, 6-3.
Game One:
Graduate senior Meghan O'Neil started in game one for the Huskies. She went 4.1 innings giving up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
Jana Sanden got the Huskies on the board first for the second game in a row. She singled off the center field wall, scoring Lexi Hastings and giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
GSU tied the game at one in the third inning. UConn regained the lead an inning later, as Rosie Garcia singled to center field bringing home pinch runner Caylee De Meo from second base.
Senior transfer Hallie Siems came in relief for O'Neil in the fifth inning. She finished out the game in the circle for the Huskies going 2.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits, adding one strikeout.
GSU scored two runs in the fifth, recapturing the lead. The Huskies didn't quit putting together a rally in the bottom of the seventh to get in the win column for the first time this season. UConn loaded the bases with the first three batters of the inning, setting the stage for Huskies to walk it off. Grace Jenkins hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Lauren Benson from third base. Sanden was the hero following Jenkins with another sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Hastings.
Game Two:
Hope Jenkins started in the circle in game two. She went five innings giving up two runs on five hits, adding a pair of strikeouts.
UConn opened the scoring in the third inning. Haley Coupal drove in her first run of the season with an infield single, scoring pinch runner Rayah Snyder from third base.
Seattle responded in the following inning with two runs, putting the Redhawks in front, 2-1.
Coupal game through again for the Huskies at the plate tying the game in the fifth inning on an infield single, scoring De Meo from third base.
UConn made two pitching changes in the sixth inning. Sydnee Koosh came in relief for Jenkins only facing four batters. Siems would relieve Koosh and finish out the game in the circle for the Huskies going 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits with a strikeout.
Seattle took the lead for good in the sixth inning scoring two runs. They would add another pair of runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach for the Huskies.
UConn continued to fight, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh off the bat of Grace Jenkins, but the deficit proved to be too large to mount another comeback.
Up Next:
UConn returns to action tomorrow as they matchup with the host school, UCF at 5:30pm. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
