AT FIRST GLANCE
Simply put, Tina Charles put
together one of the best seasons by a UConn freshman…honored as the USBWA
National Freshman of the Year as well as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year,
Charles shattered the UConn freshman record book in a variety of areas…she
posted the top totals ever by a UConn rookie in blocks (81) and rebounds (296)
as well as the second-highest freshman scoring total (456) in UConn annals…was
also honored as the only freshman in the nation selected to the 52-member Kodak
All-District Teams in 2006-07…her 11 double-doubles in 2006-07 also rank as the
most-ever by a UConn freshman… her 81 blocks during freshman season already
ranks her among the top-15 in UConn’s career block leaders and represents the
seventh-highest single-season total in UConn annals…was a 2006-07 All-BIG EAST
Second Team and All-Freshman Team selection… also was named as a Associated
Press Honorable Mention All-America… name BIG EAST Freshman of the Week six
times…is one of the 25 players named to the 2007-08 Preseason Wade Watch List…
has tallied double-figure points 23 times in her career…has appeared in 36 games
while making 32 starts entering sophomore season…has posted 20 or more points
five times in her career…has 11 career double-doubles.
2006-07 SEASON
Appeared in 36 games while
making 32 starts…named as the USBWA National Freshman of the Year and the BIG
EAST Freshman of the Year…ranked second on the team with 12.7 ppg…notched
double-figure points in 23 games, including five 20-point plus scoring
efforts…tallied a UConn freshman record 11 double-doubles…her team-best 81
blocks broke the UConn freshman record and ranks as the seventh highest total in
the program’s history…led team with 8.2 rebounds, which ranked seventh-best
among BIG EAST Conference leaders…ranked second among BIG EAST leaders with
team-best .590 field goal percentage…average of 2.25 blocks per game ranked
third among conference leaders…shattered UConn freshman record with 296
rebounds….34 points at South Florida (2/20) marked the largest total ever by a
UConn freshman… honored as the only freshman in the nation selected to the
52-member Kodak All-District…All-BIG EAST Second Team and All-Freshman Team
selection… also was named as a Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America…
name BIG EAST Freshman of the Week six times…spent the summer prior to the
season playing for the USA U-18 National Team which
won a gold medal at the 2006 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship for
Women…tallied 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting in NCAA Regional Semifinal win over
N.C. State (3/24)…scored 22 points while shooting 9-for-11 with four
blocks in the second round of the NCAA Tournament vs. UW-Green Bay
(3/20)...dropped in 10 points and seven rebounds in the first round of the NCAA
Tournament vs. UMBC (3/18)...averaged 11.7 points with eight blocks in the BIG
EAST Tournament...recorded double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in BIG
EAST quarterfinal win over South Florida (3/4)…named BIG EAST Freshman of the
Week for the sixth time on Feb. 25 after averaging a double-double with 20.7
points and 11.0 rebounds in a 3-0 week...recorded 10th double-double of the
season with 21 points and 13 rebounds vs. Villanova (2/24)...put together ninth
double-double of the season with 34 points and 17 rebounds at USF (2/20) -
marking the highest single- season scoring total by a UConn player since Diana
Taurasi scored 35 vs. TCU on March 25, 2003…also marked the highest single-game
scoring total every by a UConn freshman...recorded 16 points with nine rebounds
against Pittsburgh (2/17)... had 17 points and nine rebounds at LSU
(2/11)...scored 15 points with 10 rebounds vs. Rutgers (2/6)... had 20 points
and 14 rebounds against Marquette (2/3)...recorded nine blocks tying a school
record and breaking the BIG EAST freshman record against Notre Dame
(1/27)...also finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds against the Fighting
Irish, coming just one block shy of becoming only the second UConn player since
Laura Lishness to put together a triple-double...earned BIG EAST Freshman of the
Week honors for second straight week on Jan. 22 after averaging 16.5 points on
70.6 percent shooting in wins over Providence (1/17) and St. John’s
(1/21)...dropped 18 points in only 18 minutes at Providence (1/17)...named BIG
EAST Freshman of the Week on Jan. 15 after averaging 17.0 points, 15.5 rebounds
and 3.5 blocks in UConn's 2-0 week that included wins over Seton Hall and
Syracuse...brought down a career-high 19 rebounds with 14 points for a second
straight double-double vs. Syracuse (1/13)...her 19 rebounds vs. Syracuse were
the most by a UConn player since Swin Cash pulled down 20 on February 20, 2001
vs. West Virginia...recorded her third double-double in four games with 20
points and 12 rebounds vs. Seton Hall (1/9)...tallied 13 points and 12 rebounds
at West Virginia (1/2)...named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Dec. 25 after
averaging 12.0 points while shooting .654 (17-of-26) from the field in wins over
Virginia (12/18), Colorado State (12/21) and Oakland (12/23)...tallied 18 points
and 17 rebounds in her second collegiate game vs. Colgate (11/16), becoming the
fastest player in UConn history to post a double-double since Ann Strother did
it in the first game of her freshman season in 2002-03…saw first collegiate
action and scored first career points with five points along with 10 rebounds in
season opener vs. Richmond (11/13).

Consensus 2006 National Player of the Year...totaled 1,750 points, 1,224
rebounds, 440 assists and 432 blocks in three varsity seasons at Christ the King

(2004-05), averaged 21.2 ppg, 13.8 rpg, 3.4 apg, 4.5 spg and 6.2 bpg while
leading Christ the King to a perfect 27-0 record, a state championship and a No.
1 ranking from USA Today...as a sophomore (2003-04) averaged 18.2 ppg, 12.1 rpg,
2.1 apg, 2.9 spg and 4.9 bpg while leading Christ the King to a 25-2 mark...led
junior varsity squad to a 22-0 record as a freshman (2002-03).
