Softball takes split in day one of T-Mobile Tournament

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The UConn softball team (2-3) split their opening two games in the T-Mobile Tournament at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. The Huskies took down Bowling Green 13-1 in game one on Friday and fell to the no. 3-ranked Florida Gators in game two.
Meghan O'Neil started in game one for the Huskies. She pitched four strong innings only giving up one run earning her first win of the season. Hope Jenkins came in to close out the win in the fifth striking out all three batters she faced.
UConn batted around in the top half of the first inning scoring five runs and sending nine batters to the plate. Grace Jenkins opened the scoring for the Huskies hitting a double off the wall in dead center to score Savannah Ring. Laura Benson worked a walk with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 2-0. Aziah James singled up the middle to score two more for the Huskies.
Grace Jenkins led the way hitting her team leading third and fourth home runs driving in three runs for the Huskies. Her sister, Hope Jenkins had a three hit game as well driving in two runs of her own.
Haley Coupal delivered a two run double, the first RBI's of her college career. Giuliana Abruscato also got her first run batted in of the season with a single to left field making it 13-0.
Payton Kinney started in game two for the Huskies. She went two innings notching a strikeout. Delaney Nagy made her first appearance of the season coming in relief for Kinney in the third inning going 0.2 innings with a strikeout.
Florida opened the scoring with runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Gators broke it open in the third inning scoring six runs to make it 8-0.
The Huskies got on the board in the fifth inning off the bat of Ring. She singled to score Lexi Hastings making it 8-1. Florida responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.
UConn will play no. 3 Florida again tomorrow at 1:00pm. The Huskies will match up with Central Michigan directly after the conclusion of the first game.
